The FSSC 22000 system is designed to provide food industry companies with ISO certification of the Food Safety Management System recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). GFSI recognition ensures global recognition and acceptance among food manufacturers and retailers. FSSC 22000 defines requirements for integrated processes that work together to control and minimize food safety risks. FSSC 22000 requires the organization to implement PRP programs to control the likelihood of contamination introduced by the work environment. Depending on the industry, there are different PRP requirements: program documents contain requirements for food and feed supply chain organizations to obtain certification. They shall be used by the applicant organisation to assess, develop, implement and improve its food and feed safety management system before applying for certification. ISO 22000 and the additional requirements of the FSSC apply to ALL FSSC certified organizations. Annex 1 lists the additional interpretations for ISO 22000 and the additional requirements of the FSSC. The industry-specific prerequisite program that applies to your organization depends on the scope of your organization, including applicable prerequisite programs (PRPs) and food categories. The requirements for the food and feed safety management system also serve as normative documents for the certification of the organisation. The normative documents shall be used by the CB to assess the continued compliance of the applicant organisation`s food and feed safety management system with the required performance. Certification audit and surveillance audits take a management system approach with a process-based audit instead of a checklist-based audit. Audits determine whether your FSMS meets the requirements of FSSC 22000, if so, your organization is recommended for certification. Countries around the world are making changes to food safety regulations, including the United States and its Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The latest version, Edition 8, prepares your organization to meet most or most of the requirements of the FSMA.
