Under this agreement, UC Libraries will pay the full cost of publishing articles for you if you do not have research funds. As soon as your article has been accepted for publication in a corresponding journal, the open access publication option is displayed. All open access articles are published on ScienceDirect and made available free of charge, with the choice between two reuse licenses: CC-BY or CC-BY-NC-ND. After more than two years of negotiations, the University of California announced a transformative open access agreement with Elsevier, the world`s largest academic publisher, in March 2021. The agreement covers comprehensive open access journals for which there was previously no cost control; Changes in the processing of articles paid for by UC authors are now included and controlled in the UC Financial Agreement. This will slow the overall growth of open access spending, which has been rapid and uncontrolled. There are also other ways to elsevier link to articles. For example, if your funder works with CHORUS, all readers can search for your article and follow a link to ScienceDirect, where they can access the final version of the article or the accepted manuscript.
UC Libraries agree to pay a significant portion of the article editing fee for all UC authors, including full payment for authors who do not have grant funds available. However, the library`s budget alone cannot cover the full cost of open access publishing for each UC author while continuing to pay for subscription access if necessary. If you decide to publish your Open Access article in these Elsevier journals, UC has negotiated an agreement that allows you to do so in a more cost-effective way. If you want to publish in Elsevier journals but don`t want your article to be open access, you can still publish your article as paywall content (and therefore only be available to those who have a paid subscription to the journal). *If your original item was submitted before 1.1.2020, it may still be eligible under our previous agreement in the Netherlands. Once your article has been accepted for publication and you see the Open Access option indicating that your APC is covered by the Agreement, please select the Open Access option. Authors always have the option to reject the open access option and publish their articles on a subscription basis (paying for reading) if they wish. Under the UC agreement, Elsevier removes the requirement for authors to waive UC Open Access guidelines – a major change that highlights the extensive rights UC authors have to reuse and share their work. This change applies to all UC authors, not just matching authors, and to all articles with UC authors, not just those published under the UC Open Access Agreement. In addition, Elsevier is committed to removing this waiver from open access policies not only for unified communications authors, but for all authors worldwide.
The agreement with Elsevier will significantly advance this goal and double the number of items covered by UC`s open access agreements. Anyone can download, copy and share Gold Open Access articles. We offer authors the choice of publishing under the Creative Commons CC-BY or Creative Commons CC-BY-NC-ND licenses. These licenses help maximize the impact of your item and make it the most widespread and useful use. Click here for details. In addition, all UC faculty, staff, and students have access to articles published in Elsevier journals to which libraries had previously subscribed, as well as other journals to which UC was not previously subscribed. All Gold Open Access items are free for everyone. We may offer Gold Open Access services because the Article Publishing Fee (APC) or other fee paid by the authors, their institutions or funding bodies covers all costs necessary to support the publication process. .
